How to declutter for retirement

You’ve worked hard for god knows how many years and it’s time you deserve to enjoy the later parts of life with your feet up. Whether you’ve decided to give it all up to become a full-time grandparent or to pack it all in and move to the seaside to live out your dreams of overlooking the ocean and ‘long walks on sandy beaches’ (this isn’t a lonely-hearts column, stick with us). Let’s be honest, you’re probably looking to move somewhere smaller to release some of that sweet equity tied up in your current home.

Downsizing can seem like a daunting mission to have ahead of you, what with the 30 years of stuff you’ve collected and now having to fit it all into somewhere half the size. Let us stop you there, it isn’t going to fit!

There’s a few questions you can ask yourself to decide whether it makes it to the next round of this x-factor style decluttering or not.

When was the last time I used it?

If the answer to this is anything other than ‘last week’ then it’s got to go. Okay, we’re being a bit dramatic, but you get the gist. If it’s collected a layer of dust from being untouched or you can’t remember the last time you wore it/cooked with it/looked at it, then it’s time to say goodbye and decide where it’s off to next.

If you’re feeling ruthless then bin it (or recycle it if you can, we’ve all got to do our bit for the planet) but if you can’t bear to see if go to landfill, how about donating it to charity or someone you know that might love it more than you. This gives it a new lease of life and also most charities are super grateful for everything they can get to help them take in a few more pounds.

How much do I care about it?

Regardless of whether you use it or not, we all have those possessions that we can’t bear to throw away or have just had for so long that we don’t remember what life was like when they weren’t around.

Family memories and heirlooms are things that we say we definitely need to be held on to but perhaps not in your new home. Storing them in another location is the perfect way to make sure that you haven’t got rid of them forever but are just in the hands of the guys at STORED who will make sure to care for your items as if they were our own. We’ll even come and pick them up from your home and pack anything you need in front of your eyes for that added bit of closure that you’ve made the right decision.

Is it even mine?

We bet that you definitely have a fair few items that you’ve accumulated over the years but you’re not entirely sure where from. Stuff like this builds up over time from people staying on your sofa over the years to accidental Saturday nights with too much red wine or just the droves of ex bf/gf’s your teenagers paraded through your home.

If you’ve had it for more than a few weeks, we reckon that the person isn’t interested in it any longer – if they’re a relative maybe contact them and loosely offer to keep hold of it but if not it’s time to get it out of your possession. Space is about to get even more valuable once you’ve downsized so anything that isn’t even yours doesn’t have a home.

Once you’ve figured out that it’s actually yours and you do want to keep it then it’s time for do I have the space for it right now – if you’re teetering towards the feeling of ‘No’ then give us a call and we can store it safely and securely for you until you do want it back or until you realise you don’t actually need it and we can get rid of it for you.
