De-cluttering – where to begin

Your house feels like it’s coming in on you, summer is fast approaching (It’s pretty much arrived in London) and you need to have a good clear out before it becomes a real issue. But where to start?!

Organisation guru Marie Kondo has been at the forefront of this game since the publishing of her 2011 book ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing’ that has now been sold in over 30 countries. Kondo’s simple methods of how to de-clutter your life make it super easy and get rid of the overwhelming feeling we all get before we start.

Kondo has now also turned her bestselling methods into a free app so there’s really no excuse why any of us should have excess stuff lying around.

‘KonMari’ breaks down your home into categories not rooms; think clothing, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous) and sentimental items. Doing it like this means you aren’t focused on one small part of your home at once but could be working across three/four rooms without even knowing, which should speed up this otherwise tedious process.

Once you click into the category you want to start with, Kondo encourages you to put everything together and take a before photo, so you can see the progression you are making. Also, within the category there are further breakdowns, so you can tick off as you go – which, even if you tick off one a day, is going to make you feel like you’re accomplishing something (we won’t tell anyone you only chucked a holey pair of socks).

Clothing? Completed it, mate!

Now it’s time for that all important after photo, so you can gloat on the shared newsfeed on the app just how much better at de-cluttering you are than everyone else before you tackle the next category on the list.

Unless its sentimental – this is always the one we struggle with. Your high school leavers shirt? VHS tapes of your kids you don’t even have a machine to play on anymore? Don’t worry, we completely understand that these are things you don’t want to see the back of – go to our website, price up one of our units and we can have a team on their way to you to pack up and store away ASAP.

But, seriously, the tips from both the book and the app should really get you on your way to living in a de-cluttered home, and, let’s be honest, we’d all love that.

Oh, and there’s a Netflix series about this on its way, which we can already tell is going to be one very satisfying watch.
